A magical morning painting en plein air at Lanyon Homestead, Tharwa.
I was privileged to be an Artist in Residence here from 2019 to 2020.
The view is across the paddock and beyond the Murrumbidgee River to majestic Castle Hill is breathtaking. I remember that cool brisk Autumn morning, birds singing sheep bleating and cattle mooing…wonderful country sounds transporting me back to my childhood in Greenethorpe, NSW.
Castle Hill and the surrounds are part of Canberra’s rich heritage.
Castle Hill overlooks ‘Lambrigg’ the original property of William and Nina Farrer developers of Federation Wheat, a strain resistant to wheat rust and other diseases. Lambrigg was where William Farrer conducted his work on genetic selection for his wheat varieties, which are grown throughout Australia and all around the World.
This region was instrumental in also developing Australia’s agricultural industry, even before Canberra was declared the Capital of Australia on 12th March, 1913.
The proud owner of this painting will not only have one of my cherished original acrylics, but a piece of Australian History too!
